Nearly every natural emerald carries inclusions — gemologists call them the jardin, the garden. Most emeralds are oiled to soften them; assume it unless a report says otherwise.
Handle with care: no ultrasonic, no steam, no heat. Warm water and a soft brush only.

Chromium gives ruby its red and makes it fluoresce — the stone glows lit from within. Most rubies are heated; assume it unless a report says otherwise.
Tough enough for daily wear. Warm soapy water is always safe; skip ultrasonic and steam if the stone is fracture-filled.
